Today is February 26, 2020 -
The short story is that if $9,000 or more is donated to the
Debbie Bowden Memorial Campaign Fund,
between September 20th and January 29th,
an anonymous donor will make a
matching donation of $9,000
“There’s a right way, a wrong way, and a Debbie Bowden Way… “
On Sunday May 17, 2015, the City of New York formally renamed the corner of West 235th Street and Independence Avenue in the Riverdale section of The Bronx after community activist and exemplary citizen (my mother): Debbie Bowden.
How fitting that her street is at the intersection of Public School 24 and the Spuyten Duyvil Library as two of the four pillars upon which she lived her life were education and reading. Not surprisingly, family and Judaism were the other two in a legacy that saw her directing the Girls Side of a sleep-away camp in northwestern Connecticut – guiding, inspiring, and shaping hundreds (perhaps thousands) of individuals for the better part of thirty years.
It is in this spirit that we are pleased to announce a much-needed fundraising opportunity for the members of Temple Beth Shalom: the Debbie Bowden Memorial Campaign. ALL money raised goes directly into the TBS General Fund; which exists to bridge the financial gap between the revenue TBS collects (i.e. dues, donations, religious school tuition, etc.) and the myriad expenses TBS must meet at the end of each fiscal year.
Thankfully, an anonymous benefactor has agreed to write a check in the amount of $9,000.00 IF the TBS membership raises at least that amount in new donations for the Debbie Bowden Memorial Campaign between September 20, 2018 (Debbie’s birthday) and January 29, 2019 (the day she passed away).
[Note: Donations during that time period must be specifically earmarked for the campaign by either using the Debbie Bowden Memorial Campaign drop down menu on the TBS website – OR by writing “Debbie Bowden Memorial Campaign“ in the Memo area of your check.]
At roughly one-hundred dollars ($100.00) per TBS member family, we can easily make the nine-thousand-dollar goal – which would instantly become $18,000.00. Think about it… (that’s one-thousand chai!) – and what TBS can do with these much-needed funds…
So, whether there’s some additional money in your tax refund… a little extra in your paycheck due to decreased payroll withholding… you want to take advantage of the “2-for-1 Asset Mitzvah” sale… or you’re just feeling like a mensch…this is an opportunity we should not (read: cannot) afford to miss.
C’mon TBS, let’s make this happen! Please DONATE TODAY.
The Board of Temple Beth Shalom is excited about the opportunity presented by the anonymous donor and anticipates our successfully raising the $9,000 to meet the challenge. If however, we do not raise $9,000, the synagogue will still be able to utilize the amount collected towards the general needs of our TBS community.
